"Empty the water and fill the light." The existing reservoir buried in the middle of Hanlol Park was used as a city infrastructure untill 1993 in Gunpo City. This existing infrastructure is renovated as a museum of picture books. This existing reservoir was functionally converted into everyday cultural spaces, community work spaces and exhibition rooms. And also an annex facilities were added along the slopes on the side.

By maintaining the existing blue colored columns in the entrance hall, it led to the spatial experience of the existing reservoir. In order to contain the symbolic meaning of the existing reservoir on the elevation, a portion of the reservoir buried in the middle of the mountain was exposed using the level difference, which was then used as an entry space for the museum.

The access to the picture book museum park which is located on the rooftop is constituted as a circular circulation, and it is also connected to the inside space of the museum through the series of sunken water gardens which provides the natural lighting and ventilation in the museum.

This water gardens also acts as a visual and spatial medium between the inner space and the rooftop park. The rooftop space consisted of various external spaces with the theme of picture book corresponding to users. The picture book museum park becomes a new community cultural space keeping the traces of the old infrastructure in Gunpo City.

한양대학교 건축공학과를 졸업하고 미국 펜실베니아대학교(GSFA)에서 석사학위를 받은 후 1993년부터 2000년까지 뉴욕 Skidmore Owings & Merrill LLP, Rafael Vinoly Architects, 그리고 Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects 등의 사무소에서 실무를 했으며 2000년부터 현재까지 한양대학교 건축학부 교수로 재직 중이며 주요작품으로는 마이다스리조트, (주)대교사옥, 한국과학기술원 강릉분원기숙사 등이 있다. |
